Grandpa

Despite doing the whole photography thing for 10 years I've always seen it only as an outlet for artistic expression. Sometimes I'll diverge from that and document my experience with an interesting place or event. What I almost never do, though, is use photography to capture any part of my actual life. I don't really photography a lot of friends or family, for example. But there are some things worth preserving beyond the fleeting nature of memory, and with that in mind I asked my grandpa if I could take some pictures of him the other day. I did some closeups and some wider shots, but largely I wasn't happy with any of them. Luckily for me, after taking those other pictures, my grandpa asked if I'd do some more shots of him while he was wearing one of his hats. I said of course, but that it'd have to wait for the right moment. That moment was this morning. I had just come downstairs to find him in the mostly unused dining room, working on one of his model airplanes. The opportunity was perfect not just to take a snapshot of my grandfather, but to actually preserve a memory of him that was more than just an image of a person, but an actual portrait of a man doing one of the things he loves.
